The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has received commendation from the Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peopleโs Representatives for what the committee members described as substantive progress in institutional reform and diplomatic engagement.
Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos, presenting the Ministryโs 11-month performance report for the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, outlined a broad set of initiatives aimed at revitalizing foreign policy and service delivery. Among them were high-level diplomatic missions, joint commission meetings, and political consultations with neighboring countries. He highlighted emerging legal frameworks with Somaliland focused on electricity connectivity, as well as efforts to support power monitoring in six Kenyan cities.
Dr. Gedion also detailed the Ministryโs role in supporting 15,056 Ethiopian citizens subjected to human rights violations abroad and in facilitating the return of 131,014 nationals from 21 countries facing difficult conditions. He cited an expanded diaspora engagement strategy, which included 700 forumsโconducted both in person and onlineโwith over 300,000 participants, aimed at fostering national dialogue and consensus-building.
On migration, the Minister acknowledged growing concerns over illegal human trafficking and irregular labor migration. He stressed the importance of collaboration with relevant stakeholders and urged citizens to avoid unregulated brokers, advising instead the use of official channels in countries that maintain formal labor agreements with Ethiopia.
Following the report, the Standing Committee welcomed the Ministryโs research-driven reforms and encouraged further efforts to protect citizensโ rights, deepen diplomatic relationships, promote regional peace, and ensure equitable use of transboundary resources. Members of parliament also called for expanded digital diplomacy and stronger promotion of Ethiopian cultural values on the international stage.
Committee Chair Hon. Dr. Dima Negewo underscored Ethiopiaโs legacy of independent and principled diplomacy. He encouraged the Ministry to remain consistent with the founding ideals of the United Nations and to deepen the countryโs engagement with global and continental institutions where it has long held a formative role.
